It looks like Denis Onyango will be staying with Mamelodi Sundowns, despite the fact that his previous contract ended with the last season.
Onyango was one of several players whose contracts came to an end last month.
Teams like SuperSport United and Chippa United were keeping an eye on Onyango’s situation.
SuperSport United wasn’t sure if they would keep Ricardo Goss, while Chippa United was potentially losing their goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, to another team.
Recent updates suggest that the experienced Ugandan goalkeeper has signed a one-year extension with Sundowns.
This new deal will keep him with the club until the end of the upcoming season.
Onyango, now 39, traveled with the team to Austria for their pre-season training camp as they prepare for the busy season ahead.
During their pre-season so far, Sundowns have played two friendlies.
They faced Dynamo Kyiv and lost 1-0, and then they lost 2-1 to SV Sandhausen.
Jody February and Reyaard Pieterse were the only goalkeepers who played in these matches.
Onyango’s Role at Sundowns
Even though Onyango is no longer the first-choice goalkeeper—having been replaced by Williams—his experience is still highly valued at the club.
Last season, despite making only nine appearances, Onyango managed to keep seven clean sheets and conceded just two goals.
Goalkeeper Options for Next Season
Looking ahead to next season, Sundowns will have a strong lineup of goalkeepers to choose from, including Ronwen Williams, Pieterse, February, and Sanele Tshabalala.
February and Pieterse have also had their contracts extended.
In other news, Goss has reportedly left Sundowns and returned to SuperSport United, along with Nyiko Mobbi, their right-back.
Additionally, Kegan Johannes is expected to join Sundowns on a long-term deal, as reported by SABC Sport.
