Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi recently spoke about the swirling rumors connecting his team with Oswin Appollis, the standout winger from Polokwane City FC.
Oswin Appollis’ Impressive Form
Appollis has caught the attention of several big clubs, including the Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs.
The 23-year-old winger showcased his skills during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where he was named man-of-the-match against Uganda and scored twice in a game against South Sudan.
His impressive performance in his debut season with Polokwane City, where he netted seven goals and provided five assists in 32 matches, has only added to his appeal.
Manqoba Mngqithi’s Thoughts on Appollis
Mngqithi has acknowledged Appollis’ talent, but he tempered expectations about a potential transfer.
“I’d love to have any top player on our team,” Mngqithi shared with the press.
“Appollis is one of those players I admire, but it’s not always possible to get what you want.”
The coach pointed out that Polokwane City’s strong desire to keep Appollis is a significant hurdle.
“We have a squad of around 40 players, and while a player like Appollis would be a great addition, I doubt the opportunity will present itself.
Even Esperance couldn’t secure him,” he added.
Kaizer Chiefs’ Changing Stance
Polokwane City’s position on Appollis aligns with Mngqithi’s comments, indicating that they are set on keeping the winger to help their bid for a CAF Confederation Cup spot.
After finishing 8th last season, Polokwane City will need to place in the top four to qualify for the continental competition.
Chiefs, who were previously interested in Appollis, seem to have shifted their focus.
The team is now exploring other options to bolster their squad, having faced challenges in their attempts to sign the talented winger.
What Lies Ahead
Mngqithi concluded with a practical perspective, acknowledging the challenges in acquiring Appollis at this moment.
“While we admire him, it’s not something we should dwell on too much right now,” he said.
For the time being, it looks like Oswin Appollis will continue to shine at Polokwane City, with no immediate changes on the horizon.
