Longtime Royal Adviser Lord Robert Fellowes Passes Away at 82 Leaving Behind a Legacy of Service to Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal Family

It’s with a heavy heart that we share the news of Lord Robert Fellowes’ passing at the age of 82. Lord Fellowes, known for his crucial role as Queen Elizabeth II’s private secretary, was not only Princess Diana’s brother-in-law but also the uncle of Princes Harry and William.

His tenure from 1990 to 1999 was marked by significant events, including the tumultuous divorces of three of the Queen’s children and the tragic death of Diana.

During his time in the royal court, Lord Fellowes faced numerous challenges.

He notably had to address outlandish claims made by Mohamed Al Fayed, the owner of Harrods, who accused him of being part of a conspiracy to murder his son Dodi and Princess Diana.

Amidst these accusations, Lord Fellowes remained steadfast, providing unwavering support to the Queen during one of her most challenging years.

One of Lord Fellowes’ most notable contributions was his support during what the Queen famously referred to as her “annus horribilis” in 1992.

This year saw Prince Charles’ contentious separation from Diana, Prince Andrew’s split from Sarah, Princess Anne’s divorce, a devastating fire at Windsor Castle, and a significant dip in public opinion towards the royal family.

Through it all, Lord Fellowes was a rock, guiding the Queen through these crises.

Born in 1941 at Sandringham, Lord Fellowes was destined for a life intertwined with the royal family.

His father, Sir William ‘Billy’ Fellowes, managed the Sandringham estate from 1936 to 1964, while his mother, Jane Fellowes, was the daughter of Brigadier General Algernon Ferguson, the high sheriff of Northamptonshire.

After three years of military service from 1960 to 1963, Lord Fellowes married Lady Jane Spencer, Diana’s elder sister, in 1978, with Diana herself serving as a bridesmaid.

 Farewell to a Dedicated Servant

Lord Fellowes passed away on July 29, with the cause of death not disclosed. His legacy as a dedicated royal servant and a stabilizing force during turbulent times will be remembered fondly.

More details about his life and contributions will follow.
