Georgia Stanway is optimistic about the future of English football, especially with Thomas Tuchel stepping in as the new manager for the Three Lions.
Having experienced Tuchel’s coaching style firsthand during her time at Bayern Munich, the Lionesses midfielder feels confident that his influence will be beneficial for the team.
Positive Experiences at Bayern
Stanway, who joined Bayern in 2022, frequently interacted with both Tuchel and his assistant, Anthony Barry.
She appreciated how both coaches made an effort to connect with the female players, demonstrating their commitment to the women’s game.
Despite some criticism aimed at the Football Association for hiring a foreign manager, Stanway has a glowing endorsement of Tuchel, highlighting her positive experiences under Dutch coach Sarina Wiegman with the Lionesses.
“I think it’s great,” Stanway expressed.
“Having a Norwegian manager at Bayern as well shows that it’s about finding the right fit for the job. It’s essential that the coaching staff understands and supports the players.”
Genuine Interest in Women’s Football
Reflecting on her interactions with Tuchel, Stanway noted how engaged he was with the women’s team.
“He was really invested and interested in getting to know us,” she shared.
“Both he and Anthony were approachable and supportive, making time to attend our games and events. I can only speak highly of the personalities I’ve encountered.”
Although Tuchel won’t begin his role until January, Stanway mentioned that he won’t be present at Wembley when the Lionesses face Germany, a rematch of the Euro 2022 final that England won in dramatic fashion.
Light-Hearted Moments Ahead of the Match
Amid the excitement for the upcoming friendly, Stanway recounted a humorous moment involving her German teammates at Oktoberfest.
“When we got a message to promote the tickets, I jokingly sent a video of us with our steins saying, ‘Come to the game!’ Unfortunately, the media team didn’t approve it!”
Rising Leadership Role
At just 25 years old, Stanway is already one of the more seasoned players on the England squad, boasting 71 caps.
She credits her move to Bayern for helping her develop a stronger sense of leadership.
“I’ve really settled in both on and off the pitch,” she noted.
“From my first two games, I felt the trust from my teammates and the manager, which allowed me to express myself fully.”
Recently appointed as one of the team captains, Stanway has worn the armband several times.
“It’s only in the last year that I’ve thought about stepping into a leadership role more seriously,” she admitted.
“I understand our tactics and feel confident in communicating them, which I believe is crucial for leading by example.”
Looking Ahead
With her strong start to the season—four goals and two assists in just seven league matches—Stanway is eager to continue her growth as both a player and a leader in the squad.
As she prepares for the friendly against Germany, she embodies the optimism surrounding the future of English football under new management.
