Brian Baloyi, a legendary goalkeeper for Kaizer Chiefs, recently shared a fascinating piece of his football journey.

Back in 1998, during the FIFA World Cup in France, Baloyi was riding high on his success.
He had just showcased his talents in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and his performances had caught the eye of many, including Liverpool.
At the time, he was a key player for Kaizer Chiefs, and the prospect of moving to such a prestigious club was both thrilling and daunting.
A Personal Approach
Baloyi recounted an interesting encounter with another Kaizer Chiefs legend, Peta Bala’c, who approached him during the World Cup.
“Peta came to our camp and told me he had been watching me play on TV,” Baloyi said.
He advised Baloyi to let his agent handle discussions with Liverpool, who were eager to bring him on board.
The Liverpool Proposal
According to Baloyi, Liverpool had big plans for him.
They wanted him to train with the team for a week after the World Cup to evaluate his skills.
However, there was a significant hurdle to overcome—Kaizer Chiefs’ chairman, Dr. Kaizer Motaung Snr.

When Liverpool made their intentions known, Motaung stood firm.
He stated that if Liverpool genuinely wanted Baloyi, they would need to buy him outright instead of simply offering a trial.
This led to a frustrating situation for Baloyi, who was eager for the opportunity but found himself unable to make the move.
The Next Chapter
Ultimately, Baloyi would leave Kaizer Chiefs for Mamelodi Sundowns, where he spent over five successful years.
While the Liverpool opportunity didn’t pan out, Baloyi’s journey continued, contributing significantly to South African football.
