Recently, a remarkable event unfolded at Kingswood Golf Estate in George, marking a significant milestone in the estate’s wildlife history.
The birth of the first-ever black springbok has captured the attention of many, as first reported by The South African website.
A Familiar Sight on the Course
Golfers familiar with this beautiful Garden Route course are accustomed to spotting springbok gracefully roaming across the fairways and rough.
With around 45 of these charming animals inhabiting the estate, their presence adds a unique touch to the golfing experience.
The Rarity of the Black Springbok
Before this momentous occasion, a black springbok had never been born on the estate—a true “one in a million” occurrence.
According to Dan de Wet, the estate’s Community Manager, he believes the newborn is a ram, and he is well aware of the proud parents behind this genetic rarity.
Black springboks are exceptionally uncommon, resulting from a unique genetic mutation, making them far rarer than their more frequently seen counterparts across South Africa.
Naming the New Arrival
The birth sparked a lively discussion on social media, where the public eagerly shared their ideas for the perfect name.
After much deliberation, the estate decided on a name that pays tribute to a notable figure in South African rugby.
The top ten name suggestions included fun options like Charkie, Marmite, Rassie, Oreo, Kolisi, Midnight, Black Beauty, KingsBok, and Allblack.
Ultimately, the estate settled on the name “Siya,” in honor of Springbok captain Siya Kolisi.
A Happy Addition to the Herd
According to a report from the George Herald, the new springbok is described as “a happy little guy” who has been warmly accepted by his entire herd.
With such a joyful addition to their ranks, Kingswood Golf Estate continues to celebrate this extraordinary moment in its history.
