Vice President Kamala Harris has taken over Joe Biden’s campaign, sparking a surge in fundraising and boosting Democratic enthusiasm.
Yet, despite these promising signs, it might not be enough to secure her a win come November.
Recent polls conducted around the time Biden exited his reelection bid on Sunday show former President Donald Trump leading Harris, often by even greater margins than he had against Biden.
Current surveys indicate that Trump is ahead of Harris by as much as 9 percent, or at least by 2 percent now that she is the Democratic Party’s presumed nominee.
A Morning Consult poll taken on the day of Biden’s withdrawal and shortly thereafter shows Trump ahead of Harris by 47 percent to 45 percent.
Other polls, which started before and concluded after Biden’s surprising announcement, show similar trends.
Biden’s exit came just four days after he tested positive for COVID-19 during a campaign swing in Nevada.
While White House Physician Kevin O’Connor has provided daily updates, Biden has yet to be seen in person since his diagnosis.
Some Republicans are now calling for “proof of life” from the President.
Biden is expected to return to Washington, D.C., from Delaware on Tuesday afternoon, marking his first public appearance in six days.
Harris Secures Nomination
Following Biden’s announcement, Harris quickly garnered enough delegate support to secure the Democratic nomination for the upcoming convention next month.
On Monday, she officially became the Democratic Party’s nominee.
Polling Details and Public Perception
A Quinnipiac University poll taken from Friday to Sunday after Biden’s exit shows Trump ahead of Harris by 2 percent in a direct matchup.
When other candidates like Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Cornel West, and Jill Stein were included, Trump led Harris by 4 points, with Trump at 45 percent and Harris at 41 percent.
The most significant margin was seen in a Forbes/HarrisX poll, conducted around the time of Biden’s withdrawal, where Trump led Harris by 9 percent, earning 50 percent to her 41 percent.
Fundraising Surge vs. Campaign Enthusiasm
In the wake of Biden’s departure, Democratic fundraising saw a record-breaking increase of $46.4 million. However, the surge in donations doesn’t necessarily reflect a boost in enthusiasm for Harris’s candidacy, as the polls suggest.
