Sibusiso Mabiliso’s journey with Kaizer Chiefs, which began when he joined as a free agent in July 2021, has been anything but smooth sailing.
Initially, he described his signing with the club as a dream come true, but reality hit hard as he found himself on the sidelines more often than not.
Despite his excitement about joining Amakhosi, he only made six appearances and struggled to secure a starting spot.
Gratitude Amidst Limited Opportunities
When discussing his lack of playing time, Mabiliso reflected on his gratitude for the opportunity, while also pointing out the toll it took on his performance.
“It was a dream move, and I’m thankful for it,” he shared in an interview with iDiski Times.
However, he candidly mentioned, “I wouldn’t blame anyone for not getting game time, but if I had been given more chances, maybe I could have shown what I can really do.”
Mabiliso believes that with more playtime, he could have made a stronger impression within the team.
Feeling Out of Control
Expressing his frustrations, Mabiliso stated, “It was out of my hands. If I had received more opportunities, I would have done things differently.”
His words resonate with many players who feel sidelined, emphasizing how lack of game time can limit their ability to demonstrate their skills on the pitch.
A Desire for Support
Mabiliso also expressed a wish that he could have worked more closely with coach Cavin Johnson during his time at Chiefs.
He believes Johnson understands his playing style well.
“Sometimes, I wish I had the chance to work with him at Chiefs because he gets me, and his coaching philosophy aligns with how I play,” he shared.
A Longstanding Connection
Reflecting on his long relationship with Johnson, whom he has known for nearly 12 years, Mabiliso acknowledged the difficulties Johnson faced as a coach during a tough time for the club.
“I really felt for him,” Mabiliso commented.
“He’s someone I’ve known since I was 12, and he’s the one who gave me my PSL debut.”
This sentiment highlights Mabiliso’s deep appreciation for Johnson’s role in his career and development as a player.
Looking Ahead
Sibusiso Mabiliso’s experience at Kaizer Chiefs illustrates the hurdles players often encounter when opportunities are scarce.
As he reflects on his time with the club, it becomes clear that having the right support and chances is crucial for success in professional football.
