Kaizer Chiefs face tough decisions as Given Msimango loses starting role to new defenders Inacio Miguel and Rushwin Dortley

Kaizer Chiefs have kicked off the 2024-2025 season with high hopes, but not everything looks the same as it did last year.

With new signings and competition for spots heating up, some familiar faces find themselves in unfamiliar situations.

Msimango’s Struggle to Reclaim His Place

Last season, Spiwe Given Msimango was the defensive rock for Kaizer Chiefs, clocking 26 league appearances after joining from TS Galaxy.

Known for his composure and leadership, Msimango was a regular starter, following an impeccable season with a 100% appearance record at TS Galaxy in 2022-2023.

However, with the arrival of Inacio Miguel and Rushwin Dortley, Msimango’s role has shifted dramatically.

Now, he finds himself on the bench, watching as the new recruits settle into the defense.

While it’s hard to imagine Chiefs letting go of such a talented player, his future on the field remains uncertain at this point.

Ashley Du Preez: Fighting for His Spot

Another player facing challenges is Ashley Du Preez, who attracted a substantial transfer bid of around R30 million from Portuguese club Vitoria de Guimaraes during the transfer window.

Chiefs ultimately decided not to sell, mainly due to difficulties in finding a replacement for the versatile forward.

However, despite staying at the club, Du Preez has yet to make a starting appearance this season.

Chiefs spent R10 million to bring him in from Stellenbosch a little over a year ago, and now, the focus is on maximizing his value.

As he continues to sit on the bench, fans are left wondering whether he will break into head coach Nabi’s plans.

A Fresh Look at the Chiefs’ Defense

Kaizer Chiefs began the season with a largely revamped defense, featuring five new signings in their opener against Gallants.

Fiacre Ntwari started as the goalkeeper, while Inacio Miguel, Rushwin Dortley, and Bradley Cross filled key defensive positions alongside Reeve Frosler at right-back.

This defensive lineup was repeated in the following match against AmaZulu, and given their solid performance, it’s expected they will start again against Sundowns.

Inacio Miguel has already made a statement with a crucial goal against AmaZulu, solidifying his spot as a first-choice defender.

Looking Ahead

As the season progresses, the competition within the squad is sure to intensify.

Players like Msimango and Du Preez will need to work hard to earn their spots back in the starting lineup, while the new arrivals will aim to prove their worth.

Only time will tell how these internal battles shape the rest of Kaizer Chiefs’ campaign.
