Kaizer Chiefs have faced a setback as defender Edmilson Dove becomes the latest casualty during their intense pre-season training in Turkey.
The former Cape Town City FC player sustained an injury during Friday’s training session, prompting immediate medical attention from the club’s medical staff.
Although specifics about Dove’s injury were not disclosed, the club confirmed that he will be returning to South Africa for a comprehensive assessment and further medical care.
This development raises concerns for Chiefs, who are gearing up for the 2024/25 PSL season and are already managing injuries to four other key players.
Other Injured Players
Joining Dove on the injury list are Mduduzi Mdantsane, Tebogo Potsane, Dillan Solomons, and George Matlou.
Mdantsane is sidelined for three months due to a broken jaw from a recent accident, while Potsane is recovering from groin surgery with a projected return to training in two weeks.
Solomons, who underwent shoulder surgery, faces a nine-week recovery period but has begun rehabilitation activities.
Matlou, after knee surgery, aims to return by October.
The absence of Dove, known for his versatility in defense, poses a significant challenge for Chiefs, who have already dealt with departures and tragic losses in their defensive lineup.
Luke Fleurs’ passing further complicates their defensive strategy, leaving the team thin in crucial positions ahead of the new season.
Looking Forward
With Dove’s absence, Chiefs must rely on Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, Given Msimango, and Zitha Kwinika in central defense.
Meanwhile, the left-back position, where Dove also contributes, currently relies solely on new signing Bongani Sam.
The club is expected to strengthen its defensive roster to bolster their chances in the upcoming season.
Kaizer Chiefs Official Statement
Following Dove’s injury, Kaizer Chiefs issued a statement expressing their support for the injured players and emphasizing their commitment to their recovery and return to active play.
“We wish Edmilson Dove and our other injured players a speedy recovery and look forward to their swift return to training and competition.”
This setback underscores the challenges facing Chiefs as they navigate the competitive landscape under new coach Nasreddine Nabi’s leadership.
