In the world of football transfers, not every deal goes as planned.
Recently, Asanele Velebayi’s attempt to join the renowned Kaizer Chiefs fell through, leaving fans curious about the reasons behind it.
His agent, Lance Davids, provided some insights into this situation, shedding light on the negotiations that ultimately didn’t pan out.
Low Offer Led to Deal Falling Apart
Velebayi, a promising 21-year-old attacker from Cape Town Spurs, was linked with a move to the Chiefs.
However, it became clear that the financial offer from the Soweto giants was simply not sufficient.
According to Davids, the initial offer didn’t meet the expectations set by Cape Town Spurs, who were looking for a more substantial deal for their star player.
“There was a lot of back and forth,” Davids explained during an interview with Metro FM.
“Chiefs made an offer, but it was too low for Cape Town Spurs.
They wanted R12 million and were willing to come down to R10 million.”
Details of the Offer
To provide more context, Davids revealed that the Chiefs initially proposed R5 million along with the inclusion of two players in exchange for Velebayi.
However, this offer did not satisfy Spurs, who felt it undervalued their captain.
“They thought the valuation was low,” Davids added, “and that was where things halted.”
Comparing Player Valuations
The agent didn’t hold back in expressing his views on the valuations at play.
He compared Velebayi’s worth to that of Oswin Appollis from Polokwane City, suggesting that there was no comparison between the two at this stage of their careers.
“In my opinion, you can’t compare Appollis to Velebayi right now,” he said.
“Looking at what Oswin achieved last year, I think the valuation of Velebayi was quite justified.
Kaizer Chiefs had a fair proposal, but if they were really keen, they could have sweetened the deal with additional add-ons.”
The Nature of Transfer Negotiations
Davids concluded by emphasizing the complexities involved in transfer negotiations.
He reminded fans that while agents work diligently to facilitate these deals, the final decision rests with the buying and selling clubs.
“If both parties can’t reach an agreement, it just won’t happen,” he noted.
Looking ahead, there’s still a chance that Kaizer Chiefs could revisit the possibility of acquiring Velebayi in the next season, especially as the club has already signed seven new players this season.
What lies ahead for Velebayi and the Chiefs remains to be seen, but the excitement of the transfer window is always full of surprises.
