Cillian Murphy was spotted heading to the gym on Thursday, gearing up for his role in the upcoming Peaky Blinders movie.
The 47-year-old Irish actor, who famously portrayed Tommy Shelby in the popular BBC series, showcased his impressive physique as he prepared for another intense workout session in Dublin.
Dressed in a grey T-shirt that highlighted his toned body, Murphy completed his look with casual tracksuit bottoms, trainers, a cap, and sunglasses.
A Sharp Contrast from Last Year
This gym visit marks a significant shift from Murphy’s recent physical transformations.
Last year, he adopted extreme and ‘unhealthy’ methods to prepare for his Oscar-winning role as J. Robert Oppenheimer.
Reports revealed that Murphy adhered to a grueling diet of just an almond a day to emulate the physicist’s notably thin frame.
However, with the announcement of the Peaky Blinders film, Murphy is now back on a more balanced fitness regime.
The film will see him reprise his iconic role two years after the BBC series concluded.
Excitement for the New Project
Murphy expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming film, saying earlier this year, “If Knight delivers a script that I know he can deliver, because he is such a phenomenal writer, I’ll be there.
If we want to watch 50-year-old Tommy Shelby, I will be there. Let’s do it.”
The film will be shot in Birmingham, England, at Digbeth studios, with scenes also taking place in Digbeth and Small Heath.
Although the movie’s release is anticipated in 2025 at the earliest, no official date has been set.
Reflections on Tommy Shelby and Peaky Blinders
Reflecting on his role as Tommy Shelby, Murphy shared, “I loved playing him.
He was exhausting and so wildly different for me that each time going back was kind of a journey.”
He admitted he’s not overly sentimental about his work but acknowledges the significance of the ten-year period he spent with the character.
Originally, there was talk of a seventh season of Peaky Blinders set during World War II. Instead, the film will serve as the series’ finale.
Transformation for the Role
Murphy’s physical transformations for his roles have become notable.
For his portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer, he reportedly undertook extreme measures to achieve a slight build, earning him the Best Actor award at the Oscars.
Co-star Emily Blunt discussed Murphy’s drastic weight loss, revealing he survived on a minimal diet during filming.
Murphy himself described his commitment to capturing Oppenheimer’s distinct physicality and silhouette, saying, “I had to lose quite a bit of weight, and we worked with the costume and tailoring; he was very slim, almost emaciated.”
