…By Dorcas Funmi for TDPel Media. The House of Representatives Committee on Aviation has decided to postpone an investigative hearing that was originally scheduled for Monday in Abuja.
The hearing was intended to examine the controversial launch of Nigeria Air, the national carrier established during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
However, due to the committee’s chairman, Nnolim Nnaji, arriving approximately two hours late, many of the invited stakeholders had already left the hearing location.
Stakeholders Invited and Apology from the Committee Chairman
Among the stakeholders invited to the hearing were representatives from the Ministry of Aviation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice, Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission, Airline Operators of Nigeria, Ethiopian Airlines, and aviation fuel suppliers.
Once Nnolim Nnaji finally arrived, he apologized to the remaining stakeholders for the delay and decided to reschedule the hearing for 3 pm on Tuesday.
Controversies Surrounding Nigeria Air Launch
Reports have surfaced alleging that the Buhari-led government made a significant blunder by unveiling an over 10-year-old Boeing 737-800 series aircraft owned by Ethiopian Airlines as the supposed “Nigerian Air.”
This aircraft had previously been operated by Ethiopian Airlines, briefly serving as Malawi Airlines in 2014 before returning to Ethiopian Air a year later.
Legal Action Taken Against the Government by Airline Operators of Nigeria
The failure of the Buhari administration to successfully launch Nigeria Air after eight years, coupled with the controversies surrounding it, has led the Airline Operators of Nigeria to take legal action against the government.
Their objective is to halt the ongoing process of establishing the national carrier, citing various concerns and issues surrounding its implementation.
