Identification and Attack
The distressing incident captured in a video shows the brutal assault on a 67-year-old man in a Houston parking lot.
This victim, identified later as Florentino Hurtado, had been diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer’s two years ago, as shared by relatives.
The attackers, believed to be Trayvion Lockridge and Derodric Stephens, were seen assaulting the senior outside a local meat market on a Saturday.
They face charges of aggravated robbery against a victim over 65.
Assault and Legal Proceedings
Lockridge’s initial bond request of $1 million was contested by the defense, seeking $3,000, eventually settled at $50,000.
Police asserted Lockridge’s alleged multiple punches and stomping of Hurtado during the assault. Stephens, with five pending cases in addition to the recent charge, awaits bond setting.
The severity of the charge carries a maximum penalty of ninety-nine years in prison.
Victim’s Recovery and Heartbreaking Details
Hurtado sustained severe injuries, including a broken cheekbone, cuts needing stitches, and a possible traumatic brain injury.
His daughter, Jessica, recounted the incident, highlighting her father’s confusion, likely mistaking the attackers’ car for hers.
She expressed the anguish of witnessing the aggression towards her non-English-speaking father, emphasizing his vulnerability due to his condition.
Assault in Surveillance Footage
The surveillance footage revealed the assailants’ disproportionate physical advantage over Hurtado, who weighs less than 100 pounds.
They relentlessly attacked him until he collapsed, stomping his head on the pavement even after he fell.
Hurtado, disoriented and injured, wandered aimlessly after the assault, while the attackers fled in his car, taking his cellphone.
Emotional Impact and Pursuit of Justice
Jessica expressed deep sadness and disbelief over the attack on her father, emphasizing that he didn’t deserve such brutality, especially considering his health condition.
She highlighted the challenges faced by individuals dealing with Alzheimer’s and dementia, urging for justice and disapproving of the offered bond for Lockridge.
Current Situation and Recovery
Both attackers remain in jail on aggravated robbery charges.
Stephens awaits court appearance for bond setting. Hurtado, amidst recovery, experienced a brief moment of clarity post-assault but has since lost memory of the event.
His daughter highlighted the difficulty of coping with the aftermath, urging empathy for individuals dealing with Alzheimer’s and older individuals prone to confusion.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities in Houston continue investigating the incident, focusing on the brutal assault against Hurtado.
The family seeks justice for the victim while coping with the emotional toll and challenges posed by his condition.
