As Bafana Bafana gears up for their crucial Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier against South Sudan, coach Hugo Brood has announced two significant changes to the starting line-up.
The team will face South Sudan in Juba on Tuesday, with kick-off set for 15:00 SA time.
Importance of the Match
This upcoming match is critical for Bafana Bafana’s hopes of qualifying for the 2025 Afcon finals.
With Uganda currently leading Group K with four points after their victory over Congo, and Congo holding second place with three points, South Africa desperately needs a win to stay in the race.
Bafana Bafana and South Sudan are currently in third and fourth place, respectively.
Line-Up Changes
In a strategic move, Brood has decided to make some changes to the squad.
Goalkeeper Veli Mothwa, who faced criticism for a mistake leading to Uganda’s second goal last week, has been replaced by Orlando Pirates’ Sipho Chaine.
This will be Chaine’s debut with Bafana Bafana.
Additionally, attacker Elias Mokwena has been dropped in favor of Thapelo Morena, who will take up the right-hand side of the attack.
Despite these changes, Lyle Foster will retain his spot upfront, and the defensive line remains the same as in the previous match.
Bafana Bafana Starting XI vs. South Sudan
Here’s how Bafana Bafana will line up against South Sudan:
- Goalkeeper: Chaine
- Defenders: Mudau, Modiba, Ngezana, Dortley
- Midfielders: Sithole, Zwane, Mokoena
- Attackers: Morena, Appollis, Foster
With these adjustments, Bafana Bafana is set to put up a strong performance as they aim to secure a vital win in their quest for Afcon qualification.
