In a significant turn of events, a former police officer from Warren, Michigan, has been handed a prison sentence for using excessive force on an arrestee.
Matthew Rodriguez, aged 49, was sentenced today to one year and one day behind bars for his actions during an incident at a local detention facility.
The Incident
Rodriguez, who pleaded guilty to a civil rights violation in March, was involved in a disturbing episode on June 13, 2023.
While fingerprinting and photographing an arrestee, identified as J.S., at the Warren Police Department’s jail, Rodriguez and J.S. exchanged insults.
This altercation escalated when Rodriguez retaliated by striking J.S. multiple times and slamming his head against the floor.
Cover-Up Attempt
As part of his guilty plea, Rodriguez admitted to falsifying details in his report about the incident.
He intentionally left out crucial information to conceal his misuse of power.
