After their recent victory against Chippa United, former Kaizer Chiefs player Junior Khanye is raising some eyebrows regarding Orlando Pirates’ ambitions in the league.
The Pirates clinched a 2-1 win, thanks to a late goal, but Khanye isn’t fully convinced about their performance.
Mixed Feelings About the Game
In his chat with iDiski TV, Khanye noted that while the Buccaneers managed to turn the game around after going down 1-0, their overall play left much to be desired.
“Chippa allowed Orlando Pirates back into the game,” he remarked, pointing out that the match could have easily ended in a draw.
He felt that the first half was particularly balanced, indicating that both teams had their chances.
Praise for Chippa’s Efforts
Khanye didn’t hold back on praising Chippa United’s coach, Kwanele Kopo, and midfielder Andile Jali.
He highlighted how Kopo’s strategy of building from the back showed promise, despite the goalkeeper’s shortcomings with the ball at his feet.
“I noticed the keeper initiating plays today, which was encouraging,” he added.
He also commended Jali’s performance, likening it to his time at Sundowns.
“He was confident, commanding, and effective with his passes.
However, he was let down by the lack of support from the front three,” Khanye stated.
Predictability of the Pirates
Reflecting on Orlando Pirates’ strategy, Khanye described their approach against Chippa as predictable.
“They were fortunate to secure a goal in the second half,” he noted, crediting Monnapule Saleng for his excellent positioning and technique.
Nevertheless, he insisted that a draw would have been a fairer result for the game.
League Aspirations Under Scrutiny
When discussing the Pirates’ chances for the league title, Khanye did not mince words.
He suggested that Mamelodi Sundowns remain the favorites.
“Relying on individual brilliance makes it easier for other teams to strategize against you.
A collective team effort is essential to compete for the league or even the CAF Champions League,” he explained.
“Sundowns have the strongest squad with top talent across all positions.”
In his closing thoughts, Khanye declared, “Pirates will never compete for the league; Sundowns will likely retain their title.”
As Orlando Pirates gear up for their next match against Jwaneng Galaxy in the CAF Champions League, all eyes will be on how they respond to this analysis.
