Lucky Lekgwathi, the legendary former captain of Orlando Pirates, recently shared an intriguing glimpse into his life before football.

He revealed that after finishing his matric in the 90s, he nearly embarked on a very different path—joining the army.

A Legendary Football Career

At 48, Lekgwathi’s football career is nothing short of remarkable.

He dedicated 14 years to Orlando Pirates, making a significant impact and securing three league titles.

His journey began with the now-defunct Ria Stars, and his immediate influence at Pirates was undeniable.

He played alongside stars like Mbulelo ‘OJ’ Mabizela, quickly establishing himself in the team.

The Turning Point

After five successful seasons with the Buccaneers, Lekgwathi earned the captain’s armband and led the team to seven trophies.

Reflecting on his early days, he spoke about an unexpected twist in his career during an appearance on the Smash Sports podcast.

Before football took off, Lekgwathi and a friend were contemplating a military career.

“After passing my matric, we both sent our CVs to join the army.

Just as they were about to call us for an interview, I got a chance to trial with Real Rovers,” he recounted.

He remembered a pivotal moment when he attended a game between Real Rovers and Mamelodi Sundowns.

“I was asked to watch the match and then travel with the team.

On the bus, a player questioned why I was there, which made me wonder if this was going to be a tough journey.

Fortunately, I passed the trial and found it enjoyable,” Lekgwathi shared.

Lekgwathi’s early football role was as a striker. However, his coach soon shifted him to defense.

“I was initially a striker, but the coach thought I was too small for that position and moved me to wing,” he explained.

Since retiring from Orlando Pirates eight years ago, Lekgwathi has embraced new roles as an ambassador and businessman.

His post-football career has been as dynamic as his time on the field.
