Fast Bowler Saqib Mahmood Aims for England Test Comeback as He Focuses on Injury Recovery Ahead of Next Summer

With the upcoming Ashes series in sight, Saqib Mahmood is determined to make a strong case for his inclusion in England’s squad, despite recently signing a white-ball contract with Lancashire.

Overcoming Injury Setbacks

Mahmood’s journey hasn’t been easy.

After making his Test debut in March 2022 during a series against the West Indies, he faced a series of injuries, specifically back stress fractures, which sidelined him from red-ball cricket.

Since then, he hasn’t donned the iconic England whites, but his desire to return to Test cricket remains unwavering.

A Shift to White-Ball Cricket

On Friday, Lancashire confirmed that the 27-year-old has committed to a three-year deal focused on white-ball formats, leaving room for the possibility of playing red-ball cricket.

While this contract might suggest a pivot away from Tests, Mahmood clarifies that his passion for the longer format is very much alive.

“I would love to play Test cricket again,” he shared with Mail Sport, expressing optimism about his future.

“If I can get through the winter injury-free, I can maybe get a red ball in hand next summer and try to get back into that Test team.”

Staying Focused on Recovery

Reflecting on his recent performances, Mahmood noted, “I made it through this summer without any injuries, and hopefully, I can keep doing the right things now and that’s all behind me.

But I’ve just got to be smart.” His dedication to maintaining fitness is crucial as he aims for a spot in the Test lineup.

A Unique Opportunity

Despite having played only four County Championship matches since his initial two Tests, Mahmood is aware of the evolving selection philosophy under the leadership of Rob Key, Brendon McCullum, and Ben Stokes.

England has demonstrated a willingness to select players based on potential rather than experience in red-ball games.

As one of the few genuine fast bowlers in the country, Mahmood believes he fits the bill for the squad heading to Australia next winter.

“I know what I bring to the table and if it’s something that fits the bill, which I hope it does, then hopefully it will be good enough,” he stated during the launch of cinch’s new store in Manchester.

He’s hopeful that with continued strength training, his pace will return to previous levels.

Looking Ahead

As Mahmood continues to work on his fitness and skill, the prospect of returning to Test cricket becomes more tangible.

His journey reflects not just personal resilience but also the changing landscape of cricket selection in England, where talent can often shine through experience.

The next few months will be crucial for Mahmood as he aims to make a lasting impression ahead of the Ashes.
