Fadlu Davids, the newly appointed head coach for Simba SC, has shared his reasons for bringing Wayne Sandilands onto his coaching staff in Tanzania.
Davids, who recently transitioned from being an assistant coach at Raja Casablanca to leading the Tanzanian giants on a two-year contract, has put together a South African-based support team.
Davids has surrounded himself with familiar faces from South Africa.
Darian Wilken joins as his assistant coach, and Riedoh Berdien steps in as the fitness coach.
Completing the lineup is Wayne Sandilands, a former AmaZulu FC goalkeeper, who will be taking on the role of goalkeeper coach.
Why Sandilands?
Davids believes Sandilands brings a lot more to the table than just his goalkeeping skills.
According to Davids, Sandilands has gained invaluable experience under top goalkeeper coaches at Orlando Pirates, such as Andrew Sparkes (now with QPR) and Jyri Nieminen (currently with Feyenoord).
This background has equipped Sandilands with a deep understanding of the game beyond just goalkeeping.
The Modern Role of a Goalkeeper Coach
In Davids’ view, Sandilands is not just a top-notch goalkeeper coach but a well-rounded coach who understands the evolving demands of modern football.
He notes that today’s goalkeeper coaches must handle much more than just saving shots; they are also involved in build-up play, defensive organization, and set-pieces.
As Davids put it, “The role of a goalkeeper coach has expanded significantly, and it’s crucial to have competent individuals who can manage these broader responsibilities.”
The Importance of a Strong Support Team
Davids emphasizes that as a head coach, he can’t oversee every aspect of the game personally.
“You need to rely on skilled professionals around you who can handle specific areas like goalkeeping while also contributing more broadly to the team’s success,” he says.
With Sandilands on board, Davids feels confident that his coaching staff is well-equipped to tackle these challenges.
