In a dramatic twist during the men’s 3,000m steeplechase at the Paris Olympics earlier today, Ethiopia’s Lamecha Girma experienced a severe fall just as he was nearing the final 200 meters of the race.
Girma, a 23-year-old who holds the world record for this event, was stretchered off the track after losing consciousness mid-race, leaving fans on edge.
Reports indicate that Girma has since regained awareness and managed to say a few words before being rushed to the hospital for further checks, according to French media outlet L’Equipe.
The incident occurred when Girma tripped over a hurdle, causing him to slam onto the ground, first on his back and then his head. Lying face down and unmoving, he was surrounded by the other runners who steered clear to avoid him.
The sight from afar was alarming, with his leg visibly convulsing and his eyes open while a neck brace was placed on him.
In a statement, Paris 2024 expressed their concern: “Following his fall in the 3,000m steeplechase, Lamecha Girma received immediate care from the on-site medical teams.
Our thoughts are with him and we are sending him our very best wishes for a swift recovery.”
The race itself had been shaping up to be a thrilling competition.
Soufiane El Bakkali, who had been patiently pacing himself, surged forward with about 300 meters left, closing in on Girma who was leading the pack. However, Girma’s fall abruptly changed the course of the race, drawing gasps from the audience.
