Manchester United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, has made it clear that winger Antony needs to earn his spot on the pitch.
Despite his hefty £86 million price tag, the Brazilian star has seen limited action this season.
His sole appearance so far was a late substitution in the match against Brighton.
Antony’s Hopes for a Starting Role
Antony is hopeful that he’ll get his first start of the season during the Carabao Cup third-round match against Barnsley at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag, however, has been sticking with Marcus Rashford, Amad Diallo, and Alejandro Garnacho for the wing positions in the early games of the season.
Ten Hag’s Approach to Team Selection
“Tomorrow you’ll see what the lineup looks like,” Ten Hag said, emphasizing that players need to prove themselves in training.
He added, “We train every day, and the players have to earn the right to play.
When they show the right attitude and perform well in training, they’ll earn their spot.”
Carabao Cup’s Importance
Ten Hag, who won the Carabao Cup in his first season at Old Trafford, doesn’t dismiss its significance.
Despite new co-owners Ineos potentially aiming for bigger trophies, Ten Hag values domestic cups.
“The FA Cup and Carabao Cup are important,” he noted. “All teams and managers pay attention to these trophies.
We want to win them, just like Liverpool did last year. Winning trophies is crucial, and we aim to win every game.”
Antony’s Performance and Off-Field Issues
Antony, who joined United for £86 million two years ago, has faced criticism for his performances.
Last season, he scored only three goals and made two assists in 38 appearances.
Off the pitch, Antony has dealt with serious allegations of domestic abuse from three women, though he was neither arrested nor charged in Brazil or the UK.
The Brazilian police recently concluded their investigation without pressing charges, but the case could still be reviewed by prosecutors.
Legal and Personal Developments
Antony’s legal team confirmed that the police investigation was closed without any indictment, affirming their belief in his innocence.
On a personal note, Antony and his long-time partner, Rosilene Silva, recently announced their engagement on Instagram.
Their post featured intimate moments, including Antony proposing and sharing a kiss with his fiancée.
