Recently, Maye Musk, the mother of tech billionaire Elon Musk, found herself at the center of a social media storm.
The author and model, currently living in New York, posted a tweet that has triggered a wave of criticism.
The Tweet and the Response
Maye shared a photo of a homeless person on the streets of New York, expressing her frustration with the state of the city.
She tweeted, “Early morning walk in downtown New York.
Keeping my dog on a tight leash.
It didn’t used to be this way.
It started the last two years. Why?”
Her comments did not go over well with many X (formerly Twitter) users, who accused her of lacking empathy.
Reactions ranged from criticism about her insensitivity to suggestions that she should help instead of merely posting about the situation.
Some users even told her to return to Africa, referencing her background and her son Elon’s origins.
Criticism and Suggestions
Several users voiced their disapproval directly.
Comments included:
- @FedericoGalavis: “That’s a human being in need on the ground. Sorry for the inconvenience.”
- @MissJilianne: “New York has always had homeless people sleeping on the sidewalks. What planet have you been on?”
- @Kissmyazz24: “How dare the homeless intrude on the rich lady’s walk?”
- @MarloVanMarck: “Oh no! Did unmet health care needs and chronic deep poverty look in your direction? Poor thing.”
- @alizabethmari: “You literally have the ability to help them.”
One user even questioned why Maye didn’t use her resources to make a difference, given her son’s immense wealth: “Give them some money. Your son is the richest man in the world. But you just take a picture of them to post on here?”
Background on Maye Musk
Though Maye Musk lived in South Africa for many years, she was actually born in Canada.
Her family moved to Pretoria when she was just two years old. In 1969, she was a finalist in the Miss SA competition, and a year later, she married Errol Musk, with whom she had three children: Elon, Kimbal, and Tosca.
Following her divorce from Errol in 1979, Maye lived in Bloemfontein while her son Elon lived with his father.
Elon emigrated to Canada at 18, and his family followed shortly after.
The Musk family eventually settled in the US, where they remain permanent residents today.
