Ronald Koeman has shared his thoughts on Memphis Depay’s future with the Netherlands national team following a recent clash over Steven Bergwijn’s decision to play in Saudi Arabia.
Depay’s Move to Brazil
Memphis Depay, who previously had a stint at Manchester United, left Atletico Madrid at the end of last season.
This week, he made headlines again by signing a two-year deal with Brazilian club Corinthians.
His fellow Dutch player, Steven Bergwijn, recently made a high-profile move of his own, joining Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad from Ajax in a deal worth €21 million (£17.7 million).
Koeman’s Criticism of Bergwijn
Koeman had harsh words for Bergwijn following his transfer, saying that his decision to move to Saudi Arabia showed a lack of “sporting ambition.”
The national team coach went as far as to say that Bergwijn’s international career with the Dutch team is likely over, stating, “His book with the Dutch National Team is closed.”
Bergwijn, a former Tottenham Hotspur winger, responded to Koeman’s remarks, expressing disappointment that the coach hadn’t reached out to discuss the situation with him directly.
Bergwijn made it clear that he no longer wishes to play under Koeman, feeling disrespected by how his decision was portrayed in the media.
Optimism for Depay
In contrast, Koeman had a much more optimistic outlook for Memphis Depay, despite his recent move to Brazil.
Speaking to reporters, Koeman indicated that Depay’s new club in Brazil could still allow him to play for the national team, saying, “The level of the league in Brazil is different.
Depay can still be part of the national team, but it depends on his fitness and performance.”
Depay, who has played for top clubs like Barcelona, Lyon, and PSV, has been a key player for the Dutch national team since his debut in 2013.
He’s scored 46 goals in 98 appearances for the Netherlands, and although he struggled to find the back of the net during Euro 2024, he remains an important figure for the squad.
Looking Ahead for the Netherlands
While Koeman and Bergwijn may have had a falling out, Depay’s situation looks more hopeful.
Koeman seems willing to give Depay a chance to continue representing his country, provided he maintains his form and fitness while playing in Brazil.
As for the Netherlands, they recently kicked off their Nations League campaign with a 5-2 victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The team will next face Germany, hoping to continue their strong run of form under Koeman’s leadership.
