Dominic Cummings discloses that Rishi Sunak engaged in confidential discussions to reintegrate him into Downing Street. However, the ex-No10 chief criticized the PM for not treating government matters with due seriousness.

Rishi Sunak’s Secret Talks and Cummings’ Return

Arthur Parashar’s recent report sheds light on Dominic Cummings’ revelation regarding clandestine discussions with Rishi Sunak.

Cummings disclosed that he engaged in two meetings with Sunak, deliberating on election strategies.

However, Cummings, known for his unorthodox methods, asserted that the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, wasn’t demonstrating a sincere commitment to governance.

Insisting on significant reforms, Cummings outlined his conditions for a return, expressing a preference for the Tories to lose rather than compromise on crucial government priorities.

Cummings’ Conditions and Past Affiliations

Formerly the campaign director for Vote Leave during the EU referendum and a key figure in Johnson’s 2019 election triumph, Cummings entered No 10 as chief adviser in 2019.

Yet, his tenure was marred by controversy when he breached pandemic protocols by traveling to Barnard Castle, County Durham.

This incident, among other clashes, led to his departure in November 2020, following a fallout with Johnson.

Similarly critical of Sunak, Cummings demanded radical changes in government approach, urging a focus on neglected institutions.

The Contentious Meetings and Political Discord

Reports surfaced about Cummings and Sunak’s rendezvous in North Yorkshire in July 2023, accompanied by discussions involving the Prime Minister and his chief of staff, Liam Booth-Smith, in December of the previous year.

Downing Street acknowledged the meetings but denied any job offers, characterizing them as broad conversations on politics and campaigning.

Cummings, however, claimed that Sunak sought a covert agreement for electoral success, promising a more earnest government post-election, a deal Cummings found untenable without a serious commitment to vital issues.

Cummings’ Imperatives and Sunak’s Response

Cummings laid out his stipulations, emphasizing the need for Sunak to prioritize neglected government sectors, including nuclear infrastructure, pandemic preparedness, technological advancements, and more.

Additionally, he advocated for significant policy reversals, proposing alterations to income tax rates, settlement of NHS disputes, and an exit from the European Convention of Human Rights.

Sunak, deeming Cummings’ return too precarious, reportedly abandoned the plan, finding it too risky.

Controversial Assertions and Disagreements

Amidst these revelations, previous claims by Cummings emerged, alleging that Sunak advocated for letting people perish rather than imposing another lockdown, a statement Sunak vehemently denied.

Cummings, in a recorded diary entry for an inquiry, relayed Sunak’s alleged stance to Chief Scientific Adviser Sir Patrick Vallance, highlighting a perceived absence of effective leadership within the government.
