Dean Penson passes away at Southend Hospital after being stranded in Thai hospital

Stranded in Thailand: A Holiday Nightmare

In November, 41-year-old Dean Penson’s holiday on the island of Phuket took a devastating turn when he fell seriously ill.

Rushed to the local government-run Vachira Phuket Hospital, he faced a terrifying prognosis of possible leukemia.

However, the challenges did not end there Dean, a British national, had not taken out insurance for his trip, subjecting him to what friends describe as ‘horrific’ conditions in the Thai hospital.

A Desperate Struggle for Survival

With an alarmingly low blood count, Dean underwent approximately 20 blood and platelet transfusions over the next ten days.

Friends recount the dire conditions at the hospital, with puddles of blood on the floor, needles scattered around, and the heart-wrenching sight of people succumbing to their illnesses just feet away from him each day.

A Lifeline from Home: Ben Page’s Fundraiser

Facing a critical situation and a lack of travel insurance, Dean’s friend Ben Page initiated a fundraiser to cover the costs of treatment abroad and to facilitate his return to Britain.

The urgency was compounded by Dean’s deteriorating health, including a bleed behind both eyes due to blood-thinning.

The fundraising effort sought £15,000, and with substantial contributions, Ben managed to bring Dean back home after a harrowing 10 days in the Thai hospital.

Hope Fades: Dean’s Demise in Southend Hospital

Admitted to Southend Hospital in Essex on November 30, Dean’s battle against the mysterious illness ultimately proved insurmountable.

Tragically, he passed away at Southend Hospital, leaving behind a heartbroken community of friends.

Ben, who spearheaded the fundraising campaign, conveyed the somber news, highlighting Dean’s rare blood disorder that hindered platelet and bone marrow production.

Farewell to a Beloved Soul

In the wake of Dean’s passing, tributes poured in, underscoring his vibrant personality and his role as the “soul of the party.”

Friends expressed deep sorrow and disbelief, emphasizing the loss of an amazing person.

Despite the efforts to bring him home and the support from the fundraiser, Dean Penson’s journey ended in tragedy, leaving an indelible mark on those who knew and cared for him.
