Manchester United legend David Beckham shared an exciting look back at his illustrious football career by naming his ultimate 5-a-side team on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast.
With stints at some of the world’s most prestigious clubs, including Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain, Beckham had an impressive roster of talent to choose from.
Solid Defense with Legends
Kicking off his dream team, Beckham selected a formidable defensive duo: Brazilian superstar Roberto Carlos and Italian icon Paolo Maldini.
However, it was the midfield maestro Zinedine Zidane who really captured Beckham’s admiration.
Reflecting on their time together at Madrid, Beckham couldn’t help but sing Zidane’s praises.
“Zidane isn’t just one of the best players I’ve ever played with; he’s also one of the hardest workers and just so effortlessly cool,” Beckham shared.
He described how Zidane had a unique ability to control the ball in any situation, saying, “People would come to the Bernabeu just to see him control the ball—it was like watching a ballerina perform.
Everything he does is so graceful and elegant.”
The Electric Ronaldo
Next, Beckham chose another former Madrid teammate to lead the attack: the legendary Brazilian Ronaldo.
He reminisced about a training session that left him in awe of Ronaldo’s skill.
“Watching Ronnie play was electrifying,” Beckham recalled.
He vividly described a moment during a training session in Asia when Ronaldo simply toyed with the ball while Beckham tried to defend.
“I slid across thinking he’d score easily, but he just smiled and tapped it in. It was like, wow! This guy is something else!”
United’s Own Roy Keane
Despite initially naming a team without any Manchester United players, Beckham eventually included one of the club’s all-time greats: his former captain Roy Keane.
Beckham emphasized the leadership and intensity Keane brought to the team, saying, “You need a leader who’s ready to fight, and that’s Keane for you.”
He reflected on how Keane’s relentless drive inspired everyone around him.
“He never took a day off—not physically, but mentally. Every training session was a chance to win, and he set that standard for us all. That’s why he was such a winner.”
