Soweto Flying Squad members received commendation from Gauteng Police Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela on the afternoon of August 26, 2023. The squad had intercepted a suspicious vehicle in the Ennerdale precinct, leading to the arrest of two suspects and the confiscation of three rifles, as reported by the South African Police Services (SAPS).

During a patrol along the Golden Highway on their way to the N1 Highway in Grasmere, the flying squad noticed a Volkswagen Polo Vivo carrying three individuals. The squad stopped the vehicle, and as they approached, the driver fled to a nearby field. The remaining two occupants were apprehended, and a search yielded the discovery of two R5 rifles and an AK-47 rifle, along with a substantial amount of ammunition.

Lt Gen Mawela praised the vigilance and effective apprehension of the squad members, noting that their commitment to reducing violent crimes and illegal firearms in Gauteng was yielding positive results.

The arrested individuals are set to face charges related to the possession of unauthorized firearms and ammunition. Efforts are underway to locate and apprehend the fleeing driver. To report criminal activity, the public is encouraged to call Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS app.

Another operation, Operation Shanela, has also contributed to such successful recoveries, alongside daily crime prevention actions and intelligence-driven operations. In a separate incident, on August 9, 2023, a collaborative effort involving various law enforcement units led to the arrest of four individuals suspected of being illegal miners in possession of an unlicensed firearm and gold-bearing material in the Primrose area.
