Meet Christopher Berry, a 68-year-old man from Warrington, Cheshire, whose life has been a rollercoaster of legal troubles and public antics.
Known affectionately as ‘Dancin’ Chris’ due to his habit of dancing along the roads while under the influence, Berry has amassed an astonishing 53-year record of drunken behavior, racking up a staggering 340 offences since 1971.
His history includes a wide range of charges, from fighting and threatening violence to the more bizarre act of urinating in public.
Legal Consequences
Berry’s disruptive behavior has not gone unnoticed. In 2009, he received a Criminal Anti-Social Behaviour Order (CRASBO) that prohibited him from dancing in the streets and sitting or lying on roads.
These measures were put in place after multiple incidents where he was seen flailing his arms, making loud noises, and even stepping into oncoming traffic.
Fast forward to January 2020, and he was slapped with a four-year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) that barred him from the town center, a result of 19 incidents involving fighting, threatening police officers, and public drunkenness over just five months.
Courtroom Drama
Despite his extensive criminal record, Berry found himself back in court last April for an incident that involved verbally abusing a physiotherapist who simply asked him to move from her business’s entrance.
While intoxicated and slurring his words, he told her, “I am nearly 70 years old. You can f*** off.”
When he appeared at Warrington Magistrates Court, Berry admitted to using threatening behavior but claimed to have turned a new leaf, stating he had been sober for two months.
A Glimmer of Hope
Prosecutor Lynne Sayers didn’t hold back when detailing Berry’s lengthy history of offences, while his solicitor, Gary Schooler, shed light on his recent struggles, including the distressing news of his sister’s cancer diagnosis.
Schooler explained that this heartbreaking event led Berry to stop drinking, and he expressed his determination to remain sober.
Magistrate Michael Danaher recognized Berry’s efforts, commending him for his recent sobriety but warning him to stay on the right path: “We are very pleased to hear that you have stopped drinking, and hopefully that will continue.
Just keep off the drink, keep sober, and keep out of trouble, and you won’t hear any more of this.”
Danaher also reminded Berry of the nature of a conditional discharge, noting that he had likely received hundreds in the past.
A Local Celebrity
Berry’s notoriety goes beyond his criminal history.
Back in 2008, a fan group emerged on Facebook, attracting over 7,000 members.
Motorists would honk their horns in support as they passed him on the street, a testament to his strange but beloved status in the community.
With a tumultuous past and newfound commitment to sobriety, one can only wonder what the future holds for Dancin’ Chris.
