Chippa United has reportedly set its sights on securing the services of Kaizer Chiefs defender Thatayaone Ditlhokwe.
This move comes as Ditlhokwe’s future at Chiefs looks uncertain following the arrival of new defensive signings, Rushwin Dortley and Bradley Cross.
Dortley, a 22-year-old defender, is considered more technically skilled than Ditlhokwe, while the 23-year-old Cross brings versatility to the squad.
Additionally, the Soweto giants have strengthened their backline with the acquisition of Angolan defender Miguel Inacio.
Ditlhokwe’s playing style, which lacks the technical finesse favored by Chiefs’ Head Coach Nasreddine Nabi, has led the Botswana international to reassess his role at the club.
A Reunion on the Horizon?
Ditlhokwe, who also captains the Botswana national team, is said to be open to a move to Chippa United.
Head coach Kwanele Kopo and assistant Thabo September, who both worked with him during his time at SuperSport United, are eager to reunite with the 25-year-old defender.
Ditlhokwe joined Kaizer Chiefs at the start of the 2023/24 season on a free transfer and signed a four-year contract.
However, with Chiefs still searching for a top goal-scorer, Ditlhokwe’s departure could open up a valuable foreign player slot, allowing the club to make another key signing.
Potential Challenges in the Transfer Deal
The main hurdle in Ditlhokwe’s possible switch to Chippa United is his current salary package, which may be difficult for the Eastern Cape side to match.
However, the defender is reportedly willing to make compromises to facilitate the move.
The two clubs are considering various options, including a loan deal or a permanent transfer.
With the transfer window open until September 20th, there is still plenty of time for both clubs to finalize the details of a potential agreement.
Chippa United’s Transfer Ambitions
Chippa United has shown a strong desire to bolster its defensive line, already adding experienced defensive midfielder Andile Jali to their squad.
The club also signed Tanzanian left-back Gadiel Kamagi, who spent last season at Cape Town Spurs.
Further strengthening their squad, Chippa United brought in talented winger Giovanni Philander from FN Rangers and secured Aphelele Teto on loan from Scottish side Livingston FC.
New signings also include Pretoria Callies attacker Thobani Jacobs, winger Sifiso Mazibuko from Jomo Cosmos, Boy Madingwane from Baroka FC, and Seun ‘Tower’ Ndlovu from Kruger United.
As negotiations continue, it remains to be seen whether Chippa United will succeed in adding Thatayaone Ditlhokwe to their growing roster.
