In Arizona, the state’s Catholic bishops have taken a strong stand against a proposed ballot measure that seeks to criminalize illegal immigration at the state level and bolster state border enforcement efforts.
This measure, known as the Arizona Immigration and Border Law Enforcement Measure, or Proposition 314, will be up for a vote in the upcoming November election.
Despite acknowledging the challenges at the U.S.-Mexico border, the four bishops expressed concerns, stating that the proposition could have “harmful consequences.”
Federal vs. State Responsibility
The bishops argue that border enforcement is a responsibility that should lie with the federal government, not individual states.
They fear that if this measure passes, it may lead to dangerous criminals evading capture, thus jeopardizing public safety.
Proposition 314 would make it a crime under state law for migrants to enter Arizona outside of official ports of entry.
It would also empower state and local police to arrest undocumented migrants and give state judges the authority to order deportations.
Additionally, the measure would mandate verification of immigration status before individuals can access financial aid or public welfare programs.
False information submitted to avoid detection or access benefits could result in Class 6 felony charges.
Furthermore, it would impose severe penalties for selling fentanyl that leads to someone’s death, classifying it as a Class 2 felony.
Concerns Raised by the Bishops
The Arizona bishops caution that the measure could instill fear in communities, leading to negative outcomes.
They worry that state and local law enforcement assuming roles meant for federal authorities might deter crime victims and witnesses from coming forward.
They emphasize that immigration is a national issue that should not be left to individual states.
Instead of holding the federal government accountable, they believe Proposition 314 could create more confusion and place unrealistic burdens on state judicial and law enforcement personnel.
Call for Comprehensive Reform
While the bishops oppose Proposition 314, they also stress the urgent need for comprehensive immigration reform at the federal level.
Bishop Edward Weisenburger of Tucson, in a video statement, highlighted the federal government’s role in managing the border and addressing the challenges faced by both asylum seekers and U.S. communities.
He expressed frustration over the lack of a federal solution, calling for overdue reforms that address the ongoing issues.
