Cameron Jones Receives 10-Year Prison Sentence for Recklessly Driving at 120mph and Causing the Death of His Fiancé Demi Leigh Mabbitt on Swansea Road in Merthyr Tydfil

In a devastating turn of events, Cameron Jones, 30, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison following a tragic accident that claimed the life of his fiancé, Demi Leigh Mabbitt.

The horrific crash occurred when Jones, driving his Audi S3 at speeds of up to 120mph on residential streets with a speed limit of 20mph, lost control and crashed into a boundary wall. The aftermath was nothing short of catastrophic.

On the night of April 5, 2024, around 11:45 PM, Jones was speeding through Swansea Road in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. His reckless driving not only led to the car aquaplaning but also resulted in a fatal collision.

CCTV footage captured the chilling moment Jones fled the scene, leaving Demi, 25, severely injured and thrown 27 meters from the wreckage.

Tragically, Demi succumbed to her injuries a week later.

Following the crash, Jones attempted to cover his tracks by blaming Demi for the accident.

He misled witnesses, claiming he needed to find “the guy who was driving the car” and insisting “My missus just crashed the car.” His actions were not only cowardly but showed a complete disregard for Demi’s condition.

Witnesses described the scene as if “a bomb had gone off,” with car parts scattered everywhere.

Chad Pop, a motorist at the scene, said it was “like a bomb had gone off.”

Another witness, who found Demi on the roadside, performed CPR until she was taken to the hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Demi’s condition worsened, leading to her death on April 12.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

Three weeks after the incident, Jones surrendered to the police.

During questioning, he refused to comment but eventually admitted to being the driver. CCTV and DNA evidence corroborated his involvement.

At Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court, Jones faced charges of death by dangerous driving, driving while uninsured, and driving while disqualified, among other offenses.

In court, Demi’s family expressed their profound grief.

Her father, Paul Mabbitt, delivered a heartfelt statement describing Demi as a “wonderful” person whose loss has left the family “torn apart.”

He expressed deep resentment toward Jones, stating, “You have taken Demi from my family and, for that, I will never forgive you.”

A Family’s Heartbreak

Demi’s sister, Gemma, remembered her as “my little best friend” with a “heart of gold,” lamenting that she had fallen for the wrong person.

The judge, Jeremy Jenkins, described Jones’s actions as “deliberate and dangerous,” highlighting his complete disregard for Demi’s life.

Jones’s sentencing to 10 years in prison was accompanied by a 10-year driving ban.

Paul Mabbitt expressed the family’s profound sorrow, noting that words cannot capture their heartache.

He praised the care Demi received at Cardiff ICU and thanked friends, family, and neighbors for their support.

Despite the overwhelming pain, the family vows to keep Demi’s memory alive, honoring her as the “glue that held our family together.”

The tragic accident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of reckless driving and the devastating impact it can have on families.
