Not Guilty Plea in Alternative Therapy Workshop Tragedy
An alternative healer, Hongchi Xiao, has entered a plea of not guilty in the case involving the death of a grandmother during a slapping therapy workshop.
Danielle Carr-Gomm, 71, passed away while attending a workshop aimed at addressing her diabetes condition at Cleeve House in Seend, Wiltshire.
Details Surrounding the Incident
The workshop reportedly involved paida lajin therapy, a technique that involves repetitive slapping, either by the patients themselves or administered by others. Mrs.
Carr-Gomm, known for her embrace of alternative and holistic medicine, was participating in this therapy session when the unfortunate incident occurred.
The Legal Charge and Allegations
Xiao, hailing from Cloudbreak, California, faced a charge of manslaughter by gross negligence. The charge, extending from October 18 to 21, 2016, accused him of failing to provide appropriate medical assistance during a critical health crisis, diabetic ketoacidosis, resulting in Mrs. Carr-Gomm’s tragic demise.
Medical Condition and Legal Proceedings
Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a severe complication that occurs due to insufficient insulin in the body, forcing it to use fat instead of sugar for energy.
Xiao, extradited from Australia and now in custody, entered his plea while the court set a trial date for June 26, preceded by a case management hearing on February 8.
Insights and Family’s Reaction
Mrs. Carr-Gomm, a diabetic since 1999, was reportedly apprehensive about insulin injections due to a fear of needles.
Her son, Matthew Carr-Gomm, expressed the family’s shock over her untimely death, emphasizing her passion for exploring alternative methods for her diabetes and dedication to holistic healing practices.
He shared her commitment to a fulfilling life and her recent contentment with her lifestyle.
Legal Developments and Defendant’s Custody
Judge Timothy Mousley KC adjourned the case for trial preparations, instructing Xiao to remain in custody until further proceedings.
Wiltshire Police provided details regarding Xiao’s return to the UK from Australia on an extradition warrant and his subsequent charging in relation to Mrs. Carr-Gomm’s passing at Cleeve House in Seend back in 2016.
