Burnley FC Striker Lyle Foster Withdrawn from Bafana Bafana Squad for Upcoming AFCON Qualifier Against Congo Brazzaville Following Knee Injury in Gqeberha

In a significant development for South African football, Burnley FC striker Lyle Foster has been pulled from the Bafana Bafana squad ahead of their upcoming match against Congo Brazzaville.

This game, set to take place on Tuesday, is part of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, and fans are eager to see how the team will perform without one of their key players.

Injury Update

Foster’s withdrawal comes after he suffered an injury during the first encounter between the two teams last Friday at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha.

He collided with Congo’s goalkeeper, Christopher Mafoumbi, which resulted in a left knee injury.

Fortunately, the Bafana team celebrated a decisive 5-0 victory in that match.

Bafana Bafana’s team doctor, Dr. Tshepo Molobi, provided some reassuring news, stating that the injury was not as serious as initially feared.

“Fortunately, the nature of the injury does not require surgery,” Dr. Molobi explained to the SAFA media.

Precautionary Measures for Recovery

To ensure Foster has the best chance for a full recovery, he has not traveled with the team to Brazzaville.

Instead, this precautionary measure allows him to focus on rehabilitation with his club, Burnley.

“We need to give him the time for proper rehabilitation, and that’s why he won’t be playing in the match on Tuesday,” Dr. Molobi added.

Initially, Bafana head coach Hugo Broos had played down the injury, describing it as just a knock.

However, there were concerns when Foster experienced difficulties walking, which led to further evaluation.

Upcoming Clash in Congo

The Bafana Bafana squad arrived in Congo Brazzaville on Sunday afternoon, preparing for the crucial clash.

This match is vital for the team’s chances of securing qualification for the AFCON tournament.

With maximum points on the line, Broos and his players are determined to keep the momentum going.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 18:00 (SA Time).
