Bruce Springsteen’s Wife Patti Scialfa Opens Up About Her Ongoing Health Battle with Multiple Myeloma During Toronto Film Festival Documentary Premiere

In a recent documentary, Patti Scialfa, Bruce Springsteen’s wife and fellow musician, has opened up about a personal struggle she’s kept under wraps.

The 71-year-old guitarist, who has been a staple of the E Street Band, disclosed that she has been battling multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, since 2018.

This diagnosis led her to step back from touring to handle her health quietly.

The Road Diary Documentary

The revelation came during the premiere of Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band at the Toronto Film Festival.

Patti explained her decision to reduce her stage appearances, noting, “I’ve been performing with this band for 40 years.

Initially, getting back onstage felt great, but touring has become increasingly challenging.”

She continued, “In 2018, while Bruce and I were working on a Broadway play, I was diagnosed with early-stage multiple myeloma.”

Adjusting to a New Normal

Patti shared that while she no longer performs regularly, she still makes occasional appearances at shows.

“This affects my immune system, so I have to be cautious about what I do and where I go,” she said.

“Every so often, I come to a show or two and sing a few songs.

It’s a treat, and that’s my new normal. I’m okay with it.”

Personal and Professional Life

This documentary marks the first time Patti has publicly discussed her cancer diagnosis.

She and Bruce have been married since 1991 and have three children: Evan, 34, Jessica, 32, and Samuel, 30.

Last October, Bruce proudly inducted Patti into the New Jersey Hall of Fame, and the couple shared a touching moment at the podium.

Patti, originally from Deal, New Jersey, joined the E Street Band in 1984, just before the Born in the U.S.A. tour.

Alongside her band work, she has released three solo albums: Rumble Doll (1993), 23rd Street Lullaby (2004), and Play It As It Lays (2007).

Her first two albums received acclaim from Rolling Stone.

Bruce Springsteen’s Health Struggles

Bruce Springsteen has also faced health issues in recent years.

He was diagnosed with peptic ulcer disease, which caused him to take a six-month break from touring due to pain affecting his singing.

Earlier this year, he discussed his struggles with Sirius XM’s E Street Radio, explaining the severe discomfort that prevented him from performing.

An insider revealed that Bruce has had a tough few years, including multiple bouts with COVID and recent show cancellations due to the latest strain.

The source noted that Bruce’s 2013 throat surgery, which repaired damaged vocal cords, has had a lasting impact on his health.

Despite his frustrations with having to postpone shows, the decision was made to prevent more serious health issues down the line.

The couple’s ongoing health battles highlight the personal challenges they face while continuing their illustrious careers.
