…By Enitan Thompson for TDPel Media. At the age of 45, BBC Formula One presenter Jennie Gow experienced a life-altering event when she had a stroke.
Towards the end of 2022, she vanished from television and social media, later revealing the cause of her absence.
In a poignant moment on BBC’s The One Show on Monday, May 22, Jennie provided an update on her health and recovery journey.
Symptoms and Discovery
Jennie disclosed that her symptoms began with a persistent, non-Covid-related cough.
Eventually, her husband, Jamie Coley, discovered her collapsed at their home.
The F1 presenter became visibly emotional as she conversed with Jamie during the show.
The Emotional Exchange
While talking to Jamie, Jennie tearfully asked if he had been scared when he found her.
Jamie’s response, “It was the worst moment of my life,” caused Jennie to break down.
During the ordeal, their six-year-old daughter Isabel helped her father while waiting for an ambulance to arrive.
Unusual Cause of Stroke
Jennie’s stroke was triggered by the forceful coughing and a viral infection, which led to the tearing of a blood vessel and affected her carotid artery in the neck.
This is an exceptionally rare cause of a stroke.
Challenging Recovery and Progress
The recovery process involved gradual relearning of speech and writing, requiring months of therapy.
Jennie described her initial attempts at speaking after the stroke as “scratchy and horrible,” but she found solace in the fact that she was able to produce sound again.
Ongoing Challenges and Rehabilitation
Currently, Jennie experiences numbness on the right side of her body, loss of taste, fatigue, and continues to work on improving her speech.
