Dr. Thulani Ngwenya, the Chief Medical Officer for SAFA, has shared the most recent update on Bafana Bafana midfielder Sphephelo Sithole, who is widely known as ‘Yaya.’
Injury During South Sudan Match
The setback occurred during Bafana’s 3-2 victory over South Sudan in their CAF 2025 AFCON qualifier match on Tuesday.
Sithole suffered a leg injury that required him to be stretchered off the field.
Surgical Procedure and Recovery
Upon returning to South Africa on Thursday evening, Sithole underwent an assessment by Dr. Ngwenya.
It was determined that the midfielder needed an operation to facilitate a quicker recovery.
The surgery was performed at Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg.
Successful Surgery and Prognosis
SAFA released a statement on Friday confirming that the operation was successful.
Sithole is reported to be in good health and is expected to resume playing in about 10 to 12 weeks.
Dr. Ngwenya’s Comments
Dr. Ngwenya expressed satisfaction with Sithole’s recovery progress.
“We are very happy with his progress, and he is already walking with the aid of his physio.
We expect him to be back in action in about 10 to 12 weeks,” he said.
SAFA President’s Visit
SAFA President Dr. Danny Jordaan visited Sithole at the hospital with NEC member Job Mchunu and Dr. Ngwenya. Jordaan was pleased to see Sithole in high spirits.
“We are so happy to see him in such high spirits just a day after the operation.
He is in such a positive frame of mind that you can’t help but be inspired.
May he continue his recovery and return to the pitch when he is ready,” Jordaan added.
Sithole’s Appreciation
Sithole took a moment to thank everyone for their support.
“Thank you to everybody for their prayers, well wishes, and support; it means a lot.
Thank you to my teammates, the coaches, the doctors, SAFA, the fans, and the country at large,” he said.
