The recent performances of Teboho Mokoena and Khuliso Mudau at Mamelodi Sundowns have become a talking point as both players find themselves on the bench more often than not.
The lack of regular playing time has raised eyebrows, particularly considering their important roles in previous seasons.
The Decline in Game Time
Mokoena and Mudau, both highly regarded for their skills, have seen limited action since the start of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.
Under the management of Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi, the two have struggled to get regular minutes on the field.
Mokoena hasn’t played in the last five matches across all competitions, last appearing in the MTN8 semi-final, where Sundowns were knocked out by Stellenbosch FC.
Meanwhile, Mudau has been relegated to a substitute role, coming off the bench during Sundowns’ recent 2-1 win against Kaizer Chiefs.
Surprising Exclusion
Their exclusion from the starting lineup has been a shock to many, especially considering how crucial Mokoena and Mudau were in Sundowns’ success last season.
Both players were pivotal in helping the team secure its seventh consecutive league title and the African Football League (AFL) trophy.
Despite this, Mngqithi has chosen to rely on other players like Rivaldo Coetzee, Sphelele Mkhulise, and Marcelo Allende to fill the gaps in midfield.
Hugo Broos Shares His Concerns
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has expressed concern over the lack of playing time for the duo.
Despite their struggles, both players have been called up for the national team’s upcoming AFCON qualifiers against Congo Brazzaville in October.
Speaking about the situation, Broos said, “I’m concerned, but what can I do? I have to respect the decisions of the Sundowns coach.
It’s surprising because I know how good Teboho and Khuliso are, but it seems Sundowns has plenty of talent.”
Building Relationships with PSL Coaches
Broos emphasized the importance of communication with club coaches, hoping to build better relationships with PSL teams to address situations like this.
“We need to solve these problems by having conversations with the coaches and understanding why certain players aren’t being selected,” Broos explained.
He noted that media reports don’t always tell the whole story, and direct discussions with coaches would be more insightful.
Mngqithi’s Take on the Situation
Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi has downplayed any tensions, insisting that both Mokoena and Mudau remain part of his plans.
He acknowledged the surplus of talent at the club, which inevitably leads to tough decisions.
“I don’t hold grudges. If a player is ready to help the team, I’ll always give them a chance,” Mngqithi said, hinting that the door isn’t closed for Mokoena and Mudau to reclaim their spots.
What’s Next for Mokoena and Mudau?
For now, it remains unclear when Mokoena and Mudau will return to regular action for Sundowns.
However, with their inclusion in the national team, they’ll have an opportunity to showcase their abilities on an international stage.
Whether or not that performance will sway Mngqithi’s decision remains to be seen, but Broos remains hopeful that both players will get their chance to shine again soon.
