Atletico Madrid defender Robin Le Normand is set to miss a significant amount of time after suffering a traumatic brain injury.
This followed a severe head collision during his team’s intense 1-1 draw with Real Madrid at the Estadio Metropolitano.
A Collision in the Derby
Le Normand, born in France but representing Spain, clashed heads with Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni during stoppage time in what was already a heated derby.
The incident left the defender needing immediate medical attention on the field as concerned teammates looked on.
Following the game, Atletico confirmed that Le Normand underwent several tests and was evaluated by specialists.
Diagnosis and Recovery Plan
It was later revealed that Le Normand’s injury was a traumatic brain injury (TBI) that included a subdural haematoma, a condition caused by bleeding from a burst blood vessel near the brain.
According to reports, the club has stated that they will follow the protocol for this type of trauma to ensure his recovery.
Understanding Traumatic Brain Injuries
A traumatic brain injury happens when the brain is jolted or damaged due to a sudden impact, such as in a head collision.
In everyday life, this can occur from bumping into a low ceiling or during sports like football.
TBI can range in severity, from minor concussions that cause dizziness to more moderate injuries involving loss of consciousness or memory loss.
The NHS defines moderate TBI as a loss of consciousness lasting between 15 minutes and six hours, or amnesia that can last up to 24 hours.
While the full extent of Le Normand’s injury has not been disclosed, the presence of a subdural haematoma suggests a lengthy recovery.
La Liga’s Push for Better Concussion Protocols
In light of increasing concern over head injuries in football, La Liga partnered with the AFE Group last year to introduce improved concussion protocols.
These measures include public awareness campaigns, advanced concussion training, and the implementation of a Video Review System to better assess on-field incidents.
Geni Martínez, Director of AFE’s Health Department, emphasized the importance of timely intervention, stating that pulling a player off the field immediately after a head injury can prevent further damage.
“The brain can often regenerate naturally, but a second blow can be incredibly dangerous if the initial injury goes unnoticed,” Martínez explained.
A Dramatic End to the Match
Le Normand’s injury occurred during the final moments of a fiery contest between Madrid’s two biggest clubs.
Just before the collision, Atletico’s Angel Correa had equalized with a stunning stoppage-time goal, wiping out Eder Militao’s earlier strike for Real.
Tensions were high throughout the match, with Real’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois complaining about objects being thrown at him by fans.
Tempers flared as the game neared its conclusion, with heavy tackles and heated exchanges dominating the final minutes.
Atletico’s Marcos Llorente received a red card shortly after Correa’s equalizer for a reckless challenge on Fran Garcia.
What’s Next for Le Normand?
As Le Normand begins his recovery, Atletico Madrid will closely follow the necessary guidelines to ensure his safe return to action.
While the timeline for his comeback remains unclear, the seriousness of his injury indicates he could be sidelined for an extended period.
Both the club and fans will be hoping for a smooth and full recovery for their defensive stalwart.
