Today, the heart of Aston Villa is heavy as fans come together to pay their last respects to club legend Gary Shaw.
His funeral will take place later in Sutton Coldfield, marking a poignant moment for those who cherished his legacy.
A Tragic Loss
Shaw, who was a crucial part of the 1982 European Cup-winning team, passed away at the age of 63 last month after suffering a fall that resulted in a head injury.
Throughout his time at Villa, he made 213 appearances and netted an impressive 79 goals, solidifying his status as one of the club’s greatest forwards in its 150-year history.
Remembering a Club Hero
On that historic night in Rotterdam, Shaw played the entire match alongside the eventual match-winner, Peter Withe, during the club’s most celebrated victory.
Today, supporters have gathered at Villa Park, lining the streets to show their love and appreciation for the icon before his cremation this afternoon.
Emotional Tributes
Fans have come out in droves, creating a moving scene as they prepare to say goodbye.
Among those attending are fellow Aston Villa legends, including Withe.
As Shaw’s family and friends arrived, some attendees raised pints in his memory, sharing stories and laughter amidst the sorrow.
When the hearse made its way through the crowd, applause erupted, and many joined in singing “Holte Enders in the Sky,” creating an emotional atmosphere.
The Final Farewell
The funeral procession reached Sutton Coldfield Crematorium around 2:15 PM, signaling the beginning of the private memorial for Shaw’s family and close friends.
Just last month, Aston Villa released a statement expressing their condolences and honoring one of the club’s true heroes from the 1982 triumph.
A Lasting Legacy
“Gary was one of our own, a talented striker who delighted supporters with his goal-scoring feats that contributed to Villa’s success in the 1980s,” the statement noted.
It went on to highlight Shaw’s impact, stating that he was idolized by many on the terraces and received individual accolades during his career.
From Apprentice to Star
Born in Kingshurst, Birmingham, in January 1961, Shaw joined Villa as an apprentice in 1977 and made his first-team debut the following year.
He quickly rose to prominence as one of England’s leading forwards, earning the PFA Young Player of the Year award in 1981 after scoring 18 goals during the season that led Villa to win the League Championship.
Cherished Memories
Shaw also played a pivotal role in Villa’s historic 3-1 win over Barcelona, scoring the first goal that helped secure the 1982 European Super Cup.
Unfortunately, his career was hampered by injuries, leading to his departure from the club in 1988.
He went on to play in Denmark, Austria, and Hong Kong before hanging up his boots in 1992.
A Return to Villa Park
After retiring, Shaw returned to Aston Villa as a youth coach, remaining a beloved figure at Villa Park.
In recent years, he frequently entertained corporate guests with engaging Q&A sessions.
His passing prompted an outpouring of heartfelt tributes, including a minute’s silence at a recent match against Wolves.
Shaw’s name even appeared on the teamsheet for the match program during Aston Villa’s thrilling 1-0 Champions League victory over Bayern Munich, a testament to the lasting impact he made on the club and its supporters.
