In a statement released by the State House Director of Information, Abiodun Oladunjoye, State Governors expressed their strong support for President Bola Tinubu’s decision to end fuel subsidy payments in Nigeria and other early policy initiatives of the administration.
This support was evident during a meeting held at the State House, where President Tinubu hosted members of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), led by its chairman, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State.
The governors commended the President for his subsidy-removal decision, inclusive leadership, and statesmanship, pledging to collaborate with him to minimize the short-term impact of this decision.
Addressing the governors, President Tinubu emphasized the need for cooperation between the state and federal governments in addressing poverty in the country.
He urged political leaders to put aside their differences and focus on alleviating the suffering and hardship faced by the people.
Stressing the importance of unity, Tinubu stated that the nation should be seen as one big family, working together to lift its citizens out of poverty. He underscored the role of good governance in safeguarding the future of democracy and emphasized the need for continued efforts in nation-building.
President Tinubu expressed his readiness to share ideas, strengthen institutions, and establish frameworks that prioritize the well-being of Nigerians.
He emphasized the importance of investing in education as a tool to combat poverty and highlighted the security challenges faced by certain states.
Tinubu called for collective action in addressing security concerns and urged all governors to prioritize this issue, regardless of whether their states were directly affected.
AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Chairman of the NGF and Governor of Kwara State, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for inviting the governors to discuss the challenges of poverty and security.
He assured the President of the governors’ support in achieving human development targets and emphasized their commitment to working harmoniously within constitutional frameworks.
The meeting, attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima and the new Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, included 22 governors and two deputy governors from Edo and Niger States.
During the meeting, the governors shared suggestions regarding the issues faced by their respective states and pledged their support to the Federal Government in finding solutions through the National Economic Council.
