…By Babatunde Lucas for TDPel Media. In an unfortunate incident, a baby girl named Ryla-Rae Kenny passed away at just 16 days old, leaving doctors puzzled as to the cause.
The inquest revealed that Ryla-Rae was found unresponsive in her Moses basket on January 5 of this year.
Her mother, Ruth Mellor, had assumed the baby was still sleeping when she got up to prepare breakfast.
Sudden Change in Condition and Desperate Efforts to Revive Her
Upon discovering Ryla-Rae, her mother noticed that she appeared to be a “funny colour and freezing cold.”
This was just before 8:30 am, after Ryla-Rae had received her last feed and nappy change around 5 am.
Paramedics were immediately called, and Ruth and her partner began resuscitation efforts.
Lack of Answers from Medical Investigations
Ryla-Rae, born on December 12, 2022, weighing six pounds and eight ounces, had been behaving normally during her initial weeks of life, with regular feeding and sleeping patterns.
However, the morning of January 5 marked a tragic turn of events.
Despite the efforts of paramedics and medical professionals, Ryla-Rae was pronounced dead at 9:25 am.
During the subsequent investigations carried out by consultant paediatric pathologist Dr Heather Keir, no discernible cause for Ryla-Rae’s death was found.
Dr Keir stated that there were no significant findings, accidental injuries, signs of infection, or toxicology reports that could explain the sudden loss.
Greater Manchester Police also ruled out any suspicions.
Possibility of Undetectable Underlying Causes
Dr Keir elaborated that Ryla-Rae’s death may be attributed to an underlying cause that current medical tests cannot detect.
She mentioned the possibility of issues like arrhythmias that may not manifest or for which there are currently no available diagnostic tests.
Dr Keir emphasized that it might be a different cause altogether, but medical science has not yet advanced to diagnose it.
The pathologist formally recorded the cause of death as unascertained, as no unnatural factors were found.
Assistant coroner Stephen Teasdale concluded the inquest by providing a narrative verdict, stating that Ryla-Rae’s death resulted from unascertained but natural causes.
He added that babies can unfortunately succumb to unknown conditions, highlighting the mysteries that medical science has yet to unravel.
