…By Alan Peterson for TDPel Media. An investigation has commenced following the tragic death of a British man who was reportedly struck by lightning while paddleboarding in Greece.
The incident took place off the coast of Agia Agathi beach in Rhodes, with the man’s girlfriend filming him from the shore, according to local media.
The Port Authority of Rhodes confirmed that the victim was a 26-year-old British national but refrained from providing additional details due to the ongoing nature of the case.
A spokesperson from the Port Authority stated that they were unable to disclose further information at this time, as the investigation is actively underway.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office expressed their support for the family of the deceased British man and assured that they are in contact with the local authorities in Rhodes.
They are actively assisting the family during this difficult time.
According to the Greek newspaper Rodiaki, lightning struck the water in close proximity to the man, causing him to fall into the water with injuries.
The incident occurred shortly before 1:30 PM local time on Tuesday.
The newspaper also reported that a passer-by, identified as a Brazilian footballer playing for a local team, bravely entered the water to rescue the man and bring him back to shore.
Medical personnel then transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was unfortunately pronounced dead.
