Swimmer Survives Frightening Dolphin Attack Off the Coast of Tsuruga, Japan, Leaving Him Grateful Yet Shaken

An unexpected incident off the coast of Tsuruga, Japan, has left one swimmer shaken.

Takuma Goto, a 23-year-old, recounts a terrifying experience where he was attacked by a dolphin while swimming with a friend.

This particular dolphin, believed to be a bottlenose, has been linked to around 15 similar attacks over the summer, raising concerns among locals and beachgoers.

The Moment of Attack

While enjoying a swim approximately 20 meters from Crystal Beach, Takuma and his friend found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Initially unaware of the danger, Takuma quickly realized they were facing a dolphin when it surfaced.

He described the situation, saying, “It kept attacking me, and I genuinely believed that I was going to die.

My biggest fear was being dragged underwater and swept out to sea.”

The dolphin relentlessly bit him, leaving injuries on both arms and a significant gash on his left index finger that required five stitches.

Fortunately, a nearby surfer came to his rescue just in time.

The Dolphin’s Behavior Explained

Experts speculate that the dolphin’s aggressive actions may not have been an attempt to harm Takuma.

Dr. Simon Allen, a biologist, suggested that the dolphin could have been seeking companionship or communicating.

He explained, “Just like humans and other social animals, hormonal fluctuations, sexual frustration, or the desire to dominate might drive the dolphin to injure the people it interacts with.

Given their strength, such interactions can lead to serious injuries.”

Mari Kobayashi, head of the marine biology laboratory at Tokyo University of Agriculture, noted that this dolphin has shown signs of loneliness, which is unusual for a species typically found in groups.

The combination of isolation and instinct could explain the dolphin’s behavior during the summer months.

A Lasting Impact on Takuma

The frightening encounter has left a lasting mark on Takuma.

He expressed his apprehension about returning to the water, stating, “Whenever I look at the sea, I can’t help but think a dolphin might be out there.”

This incident has prompted local authorities to increase awareness, advising swimmers to exit the water quickly if they see a dolphin, maintain a safe distance, and avoid feeding them.

Safety Precautions for Swimmers

In light of these unusual dolphin attacks, medical teams from the Tsuruga Coast Guard have been on high alert, responding to numerous incidents involving swimmers.

The overarching message is clear: while dolphins are generally not a threat to humans, unexpected behaviors can arise, urging everyone to remain cautious and informed when enjoying the ocean.
