Richard Ofori secures a new role at AmaZulu after leaving Orlando Pirates in a move that excites him

Football careers can take unexpected turns, and for former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Richard Ofori, it was time to move on. After a successful stint with the Buccaneers, Ofori has made a fresh start by joining AmaZulu. But why did he make this move after leaving the Sea Robbers?

Richard Ofori’s Move to AmaZulu

The arrival of Sipho Chaine at Orlando Pirates marked the beginning of the end for Ofori’s time at the club. Chaine, known for his superior passing and distribution, quickly climbed the ranks, pushing Ofori down the pecking order. Things took a further downturn for the Ghanaian when Melusi Buthelezi joined the Pirates, ultimately making Ofori the third-choice goalkeeper. Before the new season kicked off, Ofori parted ways with the team and found a new opportunity with AmaZulu.

Speaking about his decision, Ofori shared his excitement for the move:

“I had a few offers, but none of them felt right for me. When AmaZulu called, it felt like home. I didn’t hesitate because this was the opportunity I had been waiting for,” Ofori explained.

Since arriving in Durban, Ofori has felt positive about his new environment, although he acknowledged some challenges with the changes in coaching staff. “It’s been good here in Durban. I’ve been here before, so it feels familiar. Everything is going well despite a few coaching changes,” Ofori added.

Orlando Pirates Struggle with Injuries Ahead of Carling Knockout

Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates are facing a tough time with multiple injuries among key players. Just before their shocking 3-2 loss to Magesi FC in the Carling Knockout, the club announced that nine players were sidelined due to injuries. Among those injured are key defenders Olisa Ndah, Tapelo Xoki, and striker Zakhele Lepasa.

The Pirates provided a detailed injury update, with the most concerning being Nigerian international Olisa Ndah, who suffered a tibia fracture in a league match against Polokwane City. Ndah’s injury is expected to keep him out for the rest of the year, leaving a significant gap in the team’s defense.

Orlando Pirates’ Full Injury Report

In addition to Ndah, the club revealed the status of other injured players:

  • Thalente Mbatha is continuing his rehab after an injury during Pirates’ 3-1 win over Stellenbosch FC in the MTN8. His progress is being monitored before he can return to full training.
  • Bandile Shandu has started full training and is gradually increasing his playing time in friendly matches. The club hopes he will be match-fit soon.
  • Tapelo Xoki has been cleared for full training, focusing on agility drills before participating in matches.
  • Goodman Mosele and Zakhele Lepasa are both in the intermediate phase of rehabilitation, with light running and strength training incorporated into their routines.
  • Thabiso Lebitso has resumed running and will begin plyometric training next week to improve strength in his hamstring and quadriceps.
  • Sandile Mthethwa is recovering from an abdominal muscle strain and is attending sessions with a visceral therapist.
  • Ethan Visagie is recovering from a right ankle sprain and is undergoing conservative treatment based on his orthopaedic consultation.

Despite these challenges, Orlando Pirates remain focused on their upcoming fixtures as they continue to battle injuries and setbacks on the road ahead.

What’s Next?

For Ofori, his journey with AmaZulu is just beginning, and he’s excited about what lies ahead. As for Orlando Pirates, the team will be hoping to overcome their injury woes and return to form in the coming weeks.
