Former President Barack Obama didn’t hold back his criticisms of Donald Trump during a recent speech, referring to him as an “all-pretend-tough-guy.”
Addressing a crowd of 7,000 in Tucson, Arizona, Obama focused on Trump’s recent town hall appearance in Pennsylvania, where Trump seemed to dodge questions and instead danced on stage for half an hour after a couple of attendees required medical assistance.
A Personal Touch
“You’d be worried if your grandpa was acting like this,” Obama quipped, poking fun at Trump’s antics.
He went further, labeling Trump as a grifter and a hypocrite, stating, “When he’s not complaining, he’s trying to sell you stuff.”
Among his critiques was Trump’s infamous “Trump Bible,” which he mentioned by saying, “This is my favorite: He wants you to buy the word of God, Donald Trump edition.”
Highlighting the irony, Obama pointed out that these Bibles are reportedly printed in China, despite Trump’s tough rhetoric about standing up to Beijing.
“So, Mr. Tough Guy on China, except when he can make a few bucks hawking his Trump edition Bibles,” Obama added with a smirk. “You can’t make this stuff up!”
Shifting Strategies
This more aggressive approach comes as Kamala Harris appears to be losing ground in critical battleground states.
Some Democratic supporters welcomed this strategy, especially since Trump currently holds a slight lead over Harris in Arizona—a state he lost in the 2016 election due to his controversial remarks about the late Senator John McCain.
President Joe Biden narrowly won Arizona four years ago, raising concerns that Harris isn’t making enough headway with key demographic groups.
A Call to Young Voters
Aiming directly at young men, a demographic Harris needs to connect with, Obama said, “I’ve noticed some men think that Trump’s behavior—bullying and acting all-pretend-tough—is a sign of strength.
But let me tell you, that’s not what strength is. It never has been.”
He contrasted Trump with his former rival, John McCain, emphasizing that McCain understood that some values transcend political parties.
“He believed in honest argument and listening to others,” Obama recounted, recalling how McCain once defended him against a woman who questioned his character at a town hall event.
Remembering McCain’s Legacy
Reflecting on his friendship with McCain, Obama highlighted the senator’s ability to treat political opponents with respect.
“One of the most disturbing things about this election and Trump’s rise is how we’ve set aside the values that people like John McCain stood for,” Obama stated.
“When Trump lies, cheats, or shows utter disregard for the Constitution, people excuse it just as long as their side wins.”
He noted McCain’s service in the Vietnam War, where he received multiple military honors, including two Purple Hearts.
Following his defeat to Obama in the 2008 election, Trump infamously dismissed McCain’s war hero status, stating, “He’s not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured.”
A Clear Message
Throughout his speech, Obama made direct references to Trump nearly 36 times, challenging the audience to consider whether Trump has ever changed a diaper or a tire.
“I understand why people want to shake things up. I get the frustration with politics,” he said.
“But what I can’t understand is why anyone would think that Donald Trump will shake things up in a way that benefits you.”
Through these remarks, Obama aimed to underscore the differences between his values and Trump’s while inspiring a sense of responsibility and critical thinking among voters as the election approaches.
