Bernard Parker, the newly minted coach of TS Galaxy DDC, has opened up about his life after hanging up his boots just a few months ago.
Instead of longing for the thrill of being on the pitch, he’s fully embraced his new role and the challenges that come with it.
A Rare Opportunity for a New Coach
It’s a unique situation for retired players to transition into coaching so quickly, but that’s exactly what happened for Parker at the end of last season.
Alongside Vuyo Mere, who also retired in June, Parker has taken the reins and is currently guiding the team through its season.
So far, they’ve had a mixed bag of results with one win, four draws, and one loss in their six matches.
Embracing His New Role
Interestingly, Parker feels no nostalgia for his playing days.
“I don’t miss it that much because I’m involved in training,” he shared in an exclusive interview with FARPost.
His commitment to the team is evident as he actively participates in training sessions, focusing on various aspects like warming up the players, developing strategies, and preventing injuries.
“I’m demonstrating physically and involved in that,” he continued, explaining how he joins in during drills and offers tactical guidance during practice.
It’s this level of engagement that has helped him move on from his previous career.
“I had long accepted that I’m no longer a player; I’m a coach,” he affirmed.
A Prepared Transition
Parker’s journey into coaching wasn’t sudden; he had been preparing for this role for quite some time.
“I was ready the year before because I was already on CAF C in terms of my coaching qualifications,” he explained.
He had a conversation with Galaxy chairman Tim Sukazi about extending his playing contract for one more season, knowing it would lead to a coaching position.
“I said I’m ready to give back to the club if you don’t see me in any playing perspective,” Parker recalled.
Sukazi encouraged him to focus on his development, assuring him that the club values and supports its players.
When Parker was offered the coaching opportunity, he jumped at it without hesitation.
