A day that began as a routine tour of the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine near Cripple Creek, Colorado, turned into a harrowing rescue mission after an equipment malfunction left one person dead and 12 others trapped.
The mine, a popular tourist attraction, became the scene of a major emergency on Thursday afternoon when an elevator system failure caused a dangerous situation inside the mine, located 1,000 feet underground.
Rescue Efforts in Full Swing
Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell addressed the press, confirming the tragic death of one individual.
He explained that the elevator malfunction occurred while it was 500 feet into the mine, leading to severe risks for those aboard.
Fortunately, emergency teams managed to rescue 11 individuals, including two children, who were stuck halfway up the shaft.
However, 12 people remained trapped deeper inside.
Rescue teams are in communication with the trapped individuals, who are said to be in good health despite the circumstances.
