Formula One enthusiasts in South Africa have reason to celebrate!
Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has confirmed that Formula One is set to make its much-anticipated return to South African shores.
During an engaging chat with motorsport influencer LalliesF1, McKenzie expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I can tell you this, F1 is definitely coming [to South Africa].”
He elaborated, explaining that the F1 organization has shown genuine interest and outlined what they require to make it happen.
“We are going to give them what they need to come,” he assured.

To understand the significance of this announcement, it’s essential to remember that the last Formula One race in South Africa was held way back in 1993.
This historic event took place at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in Gauteng, where racing legends like Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, and Mark Blundell shared the podium.
Since then, over 30 years have passed with Formula One racing gracing every continent except for Africa, and of course, Antarctica.
The sport has been rapidly expanding, with several countries hosting multiple races each season, like the U.S. and Italy, while Africa has been notably absent from the lineup—until now.

Two major cities are in the running: Cape Town and Johannesburg.

He later mentioned to LalliesF1, “There’s still a big fight at the moment. Is it Cape Town, or is it Joburg? That decision has not been taken.”
