Kurt-Lee Arendse, a World Cup-winning player, is the latest Springbok to embark on an exciting journey abroad.
Recently, it was announced that the former Blue Bulls standout will join the Sagamihara Dynaboars in Japan’s Rugby League One.
He’ll be playing alongside notable talents like Curtis Rona, Yūki Miyazato, and Yoshimatsu Yasue.
Arendse has inked a season-long deal that runs from December 2024 through May 2025.
After his time in Japan, he is set to return to Loftus Versfeld Stadium, marking a significant chapter in his career.
An Impressive Springbok Career
Hailing from Paarl, the 28-year-old has had an impressive run with the Blue Bulls.
His time with the Blitzboks also paved the way for his inclusion in the 2023 World Cup squad, where he made his mark as a regular starter.
Now, he feels that this is the right moment to take a leap forward, expressing to Rugbypass that the move to Japan will enhance his skills and make him a “better player.”
Arendse is joining a growing list of international rugby stars who have chosen to play in Japan, showcasing the country’s rising prominence in the sport.
A Hub for Springbok Talent
In Japan, Arendse will encounter familiar faces from the Springboks, such as Jesse Kriel, Faf de Klerk, Pieter-Steph du Toit, and Kwagga Smith.
The Japanese league continues to attract major signings, further solidifying its reputation as a destination for elite players.
In his conversation with Rugbypass, Arendse shared his thoughts on the unique playing conditions in Japan.
“The hard grounds and the fast-paced, ball-centric game will really suit my style,” he said.
He also noted that many of his Springbok teammates who have played in Japan rave about the experience, both on and off the field.
“It’s a completely different lifestyle from what most South African players experience, who typically play at home or in Europe,” he explained.
“I’m genuinely excited about the rugby and the cultural experiences ahead.
I hope to make a significant impact with the Dynaboars, a club that’s well-respected in the league and has ambitious goals for improvement.”
Looking Ahead: Springboks’ UK Tour
Following a successful Rugby Championship, the Springboks are gearing up for their final test tour of the year in the United Kingdom.
Fans can expect to see Arendse donning the green and gold once again.
Rassie Erasmus and his squad have three key matches lined up:
- Scotland vs South Africa (18:10, Nov 10)
- England vs South Africa (19:40, Nov 16)
- Wales vs South Africa (19:40, Nov 23)
It promises to be an exciting series for the Springboks as they continue to showcase their talent on the international stage.
